Jackfruit Tree
  • The common English name “jackfruit” was first used by physician and naturalist Garcia de Orta in his 1563 book named “Colóquios dos simples e drogas da India.”
  • The word “jackfruit” comes from Portuguese “jaca”, which comes from the Malayalam language term “chakka”.
  • When the Portuguese came to India at Kozhikode on the Malabar Coast in 1498, the Malayalam name “chakka” was recorded by Hendrik van Rheede in the Hortus Malabaricus, in Latin.
  • Jackfruit cannot survive on cold climate and young trees may die at temperatures below 0 °C (32° F).
  • Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladesh.
  • Jackfruit is the state fruit of the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
  • Jackfruit is one of the three auspicious fruits of Tamil Nadu, along with the mango and banana, known collectively as Mukkani.
  • Jackfruit has good longevity and on an average the tree has a life span of 60 to 70 years.
  • A fully grown tree has a decent size of 30 meters or nearly 100 feet, with diameter ranging 80 to 200 centimeters (2.6 to 6.5 feet).
  • A mature jackfruit tree can produce about 100 to 200 fruits in a year.
  • Archaeological findings in India have revealed that jackfruit was cultivated in India 3000 to 6000 years ago.
